Born Christmas Day 1930
Died 25th January 2020
Served with the Gideons from 1970 – 2020
Noel’s Christian life began when he was a postgraduate in Edinburgh. He attended Charlotte Street Baptist Church and it was there that he realised he needed a saviour and entrusted his life to the Lord (Micah 7 v 18). This was his ‘best ever’ decision. For him to know he received forgiveness and then on he had a future and hope, also purpose in life (Jeremiah 29:11).
One of his purposes in life was taking the Word of God to the world through his service with the Gideons. His half a century of ministry began while he was working in Brazil. In his spare time, he joined the Gideons and since 1970, Noel has been passionate about this service.
Noel had a deep love for people and valued each person whoever they were (Galatians 3 v 28). Through his work with the Gideons, along with his veterinary career, he met a wide range of people from royalty and ambassadors to struggling farmers and desperate prisoners. Being a Gideon was the best way he could be a witness for God (Romans 1 v 16).
Noel particularly enjoyed serving with the young, by distributing New Testaments in schools and universities (Matthew 19 v 14), and also in prison ministry. ‘Brother Noel’, as the prisoners called him, retired from his mission in the Chaplaincy department of HMP Hewell in 2018 after 15 years volunteering there. This was not the end of his work with the Gideons, continuing to store and spread the Word of God for the local branch (Phil 1 v 6).
Noel surely had purpose in life, a future and a hope, the Lord never failed him and he knew he was loved and cherished (John 15 v 9). We can never really know whose lives have been touched (Heb 11 v 1), so trust that his ministry with the Gideons, his testament of faith, will not return empty handed (Isaiah 55 v 11).
Noel’s death has left his wife Olive, four daughters, Caroline, Sonia, Lorna, Vanessa, sister Margaret, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and family heartbroken (Ps 34 v 18). His funeral took place in February, celebrating that he finished the race (2 Tim 4 v 7), with hundreds of pounds donated to Woodgreen Evangelical Church and of course, The Gideons.
